Stuttgart, Germany, the capital of Baden-Württemberg state and the Administrative Region of Stuttgart, is located in the center of the very densely populated southwestern Stuttgart Region of Germany, close to both the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura. Stuttgart with its

metropolitan area is one of the most prominent and well-known German towns, especially due to its cultural, administrative and huge economic importance.

Stuttgart is known for its cultural life, in particular the Staatstheater and Staatsgalerie. The Staatstheater contains an opera house and three smaller theaters, where opera, ballet, theatre and concerts are produced. The world-renowned Stuttgart Opera won the prestigious "Opera of the year" award for five years running (1998-2002). The famous Stuttgart Ballet is connected to names like John Cranko and Marcia Haydée. The city also offers two broadway-style Musical theaters, the Apollo and the Palladium Theater.

Bayreuth is a town in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main river in a valley between the Frankish Alb and the Fichtelgebirge. It is the capital of Upper Franconia. The city is believed to have been founded by the Counts of Andechs on an unknown date in the Middle Ages and was first mentioned in 1194. The city centre still possesses the typical structure of a Bavarian street market: the settlement is grouped around a road widening into
a square;
the Town Hall was located in the middle. The city is best known for its association with the composer Richard Wagner, who lived in Bayreuth from 1872 until his death in 1883. Wagner's villa, "Wahnfried", was constructed in Bayreuth under the sponsorship of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, and has been converted after World War II into a Wagner Museum. To the north of Bayreuth is the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, an opera house specially constructed for and exclusively devoted to the performance of Wagner's operas. The premieres of the final two works of Wagner's Ring Cycle, the cycle as a whole, and of Parsifal took place here.

Freiburg im Breisgau is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, in the Breisgau region, on the western edge of the southern Black Forest (German: Schwarzwald) with about 214,000 inhabitants. Freiburg has a sunny microclimate and popular opinion has it that Freiburg is the warmest, sunniest city in Germany. It straddles the Dreisam river, on the foothills of the Schlossberg. The city is surrounded by the Black Forest mountains Rosskopf and

Bromberg in the east, and in the south and west by the Schönberg, Tuniberg and the Kaiserstuhl.

Because of its scenic beauty, relatively warm and sunny climate and easy access to the Black Forest, Freiburg is a hub for regional tourism. The longest cable car in Germany runs from Gunterstal up to a nearby mountain called Schauinsland. The city has an unusual system of gutters (called Bächle) that run throughout its centre. These Bächle, once used to provide water to fight fires and refresh livestock, are constantly flowing with water diverted from the Dreisam. These Bächle were never used for sewage, as such usage could lead to harsh penalties even in the middle ages. Local tradition has it that if you step in a Bächle, you will marry a Freiburger, or 'Bobbele'.

Weiden is a district-free city in Bavaria, Germany 100 km east of Nürnberg und 35 km west of the Czech Republic. Founded in the year 1241, Weiden was originally a strategic trading point at the crossroads of the "Goldenen Strasse" (Golden Road) and the "Magdaburger Strasse". Weiden continues today to be the heart of the cultural and economic life of the northern Oberpfalz region of northern Bavaria.
Sites of interest include the St. Josef Catholic church built in Neo Romanesque style in 1899, the market square stretched between Upper and Lower Gates preserving many renaissance buildings, the old city hall built in 1539, and partially old preserved city walls from the 14th century.

Bamberg lies on the Regnitz river in northern Bavaria, 63 km north of Nuremberg by railway, and 101 km east of Würzburg, also by rail. Its geography is shaped by the Regnitz and by the foothills of the Steigerwald, part of the German uplands. Like Rome, Bamberg extends over seven hills, each crowned by a church. This has led to Bamberg being called the "Franconian Rome" - although a running joke among Bamberg's tour guides is to refer to Rome as the "Italian Bamberg". The town, first

mentioned in 902, grew up by the castle (Babenberch) which gave its name to the Babenberg family.

The Old Town of Bamberg is included in the UNESCO World Heritage, since it has retained its medieval look and was one of the few German cities that sustained virtually no damage during WWII.

The University of Bamberg, named Otto-Friedrich University, offers higher education in the areas of social science, business studies and the humanities, and is attended by more than 8,000 students.

Bamberg is also known for smoked beer (or Rauchbier in German). The most famous being Schlenkerla "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" from the Heller brewery and which can be enjoyed fresh at the Schlenkerla tavern on the Dominikaner Strasse in the old town.

In a rural, hilly region of north-eastern Bavaria, 40 km east of Bayreuth, lies the small town of Neusorg, Germany. This relatively newer German settlement dating back to the 17th century, is home to SV
Neusorg, one

of FARA's long-time partner clubs. Neusorg offers FARA participants a completely different experience than what would be available in a larger city. With a smaller community and rural setting, players won't feel lost in the sometimes overwhelming larger German metropolises. The close proximity to the Czech border also allows for day trips to another very interesting destination.
